PUTRAJAYA: Turkey’s May Cyber Teknoloji A.S is targeting to open its first regional office in Malaysia by early next year in line with its plan to expand services and technological expertise to ASEAN countries and members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Cha i rman, Mehmet Al i Yalcindag said the company had chosen Malaysia as its hub due to the country’s strong position in cybersecurity, especially after it was ranked third among 193 countries in terms of commitment to cybersecurity based on the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2017.

“We will collaborate with another local company, Nexagate Sdn Bhd, and now we are in midst of identifying our office location in Kuala Lumpur and to appoint country manager... everything will complete by the start of 2018,” he said.

He told reporters this after the signing of a memorandum of understanding ( MoU) between May Cyber and CybeySecurity Malaysia here yesterday.

May Cyber is a leading Turkish information and communications technology company. It develops and manufactures cybersecurity products especially in the field of network access control, security incident management, network monitoring, encryption and compliance management.

On the MoU, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief execut ive officer, Datuk Dr Amiruddin Abdul Wahab said the parties had identi f ied three areas of col laborat ion, namely col laborat ion in research and development covering cybersecurity technical, tools, methods and processes; capacity building through competency training programmes and cybersecurity skills; and develop marketing strategies to promote cybersecurity.

He said prior to this, Russian companies, Kaspersky and InfoWatch, had set up their regional offices in Malaysia, and this showed the confidence of the investors from a leading country in choosing Malaysia as their hub.

“This ref lected Malaysia’s position as the cybersecurity regional hub, and now we have Turkey. In addition to that, we are also collaborating with other countries which develop a lot of cybersecurity products and solutions to use Malaysia as the hub in this region,” he added.

On cyber threat, he said CyberSecurity Malaysia had received seven reports relating to data breach issues in 2015, six cases in 2016 and sharp increase to 22 cases as of September this year.

“This is a global phenomenon where data has become an asset and because of that, it can be uses for whatever purposes.

“The increase in cases shows that data breach is a main concern now and I suggest individuals and organisations to adopt the best practices and Internet users to make prompt report to Cyber999 for computer security incidents,” he added.

CyberSecurity Malaysia provides on- demand access to a wide variety of resources to maintain in- house security expertise, as well as access to advanced tools and education to assist in proactive or forensic investigations. — Bernama
