New rabies case reported at plantation in Telagus

KUCHING: A new rabies case has been detected at a plantation in Telagus, Serian.

The vict im, ident i f ied as Marni Nasir, 42, has been found positive of the disease through the Histopatho­logic fi ndings.

According to the secretaria­t of state disaster management committee, the victim was bitten by a dog owned by one Maksi Nomeni, also from the same plantation.

Following the new case, the area has been declared the 27th rabies affected area.

The secretaria­t also said that 16 new animal bite cases were reported yesterday; nine from Kuching, Serian ( 5), Samarahan (1) and Sri Aman (1).

As of yesterday, 1, 833 people have received anti-rabies vaccinatio­n, and the secretaria­t urged the people who have been bitten by dogs to go for test at the nearest clinic.

Meanwhile, the state Veterinary Services Department will continue to monitor the rabies situation in the state, adding that together with the Ministry of Local Government, they have caught 2, 556 dogs in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Samarahan, Betong and Serian.

Besides the operation, 509 rabies awareness campaigns have been carried out which were attended by 36,936 people.

Both active (47,137) and passive (1,993) surveillan­ce have also been carried out in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Samarahan, Betong and Serian.
