KUCHING: Events today and tomorrow for the state-level Maulidur Rasul celebration are open to all regardless of religious beliefs.

Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the celebration will begin with the Majlis Kesyukuran dan Zikir Maulid tonight at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak.

Tomorrow morning, the Maulidur Rasul Assembly and Procession will be held at Celebration Square, Jalan Stadium.

“Both of these will be graced by Acting Head of State Tan Sri Datuk Amar Bujang Nor and wife Puan Sri Dato Sri Dayang Lela Abang Zawawi, as well as Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang,” Dr Abdul Rahman told a press conference yesterday.

He called on Kuching folk, including non- Muslims, to join the celebration themed ‘Kesatuan Ummah Kesejahteraan Negara’.

The Maulidur Rasul Assembly and Procession, to begin at 7am, will involve 130 contingents with over 5,000 participants in eight categories.

Dr Abdul Rahman added up to 8,000 people are expected at the event.

“With events such as the digital poster competition and nasyid performance, I’m confident we will draw a crowd,” he said.

Sarawak Islamic Council president Datuk Misnu Taha said the Digital Poster Competition, held for the first time this year, drew an encouraging response of 12 agencies this year, adding that organisers plan on broadening its scope next year.

“The posters will be displayed on the LED screen at Celebration Square, Jalan Stadium,” he said.
