‘Upgrading of Night Market behind schedule due to bad weather’

-

SIBU: The upgrading of the Night Market at Butterfly Garden here is behind schedule, according to Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King who puts the blame on bad weather.

“Works started on Nov 1, and was expected to take around 10 weeks to complete.

“However, bad weather has caused the project to be delayed,” he said in his chairman’s communication at SMC’s monthly full council meeting yesterday.

He assured that the council was doing its best to make up for lost time.

According to him, the upgrading is necessary to resolve shortcomings at the site, like lack of proper drainage system and lighting.

Night market vendors are currently going about their trades at the old site in the vicinity of Market Road and High Street.

Tiong said after the upgrading works, Butterfly Garden Night Market will have 204 trading lots - an increase of 28 lots.

Meanwhile, the chairman advised the public to refrain from disposing waste indiscriminately.

“Indiscriminate disposal of refuse, bulky waste and construction and demolition materials has become rampant,” he noted, urging the public to leave their bulky refuse at Seng Ling Road Dumping Ground.

On the payment of assessment bills, he said the deadline has been extended to Nov 30.

“As of Nov 24, our collection is at 92.43 per cent.”
