Be forward looking, Dennis tells Penan community

BA KABENG, Baram: The Penan community, particularly the youth, are reminded to be farsighted and think of the future.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau gave this reminder when officiating at the closing ceremony of the football competition jointly organised by Youth Wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu ( PBB) Telang Usan Penan (Apoh branch) and Ba Kabeng Youth in collaboration with Sarawak Sports Council.

“Whether we like it or not, things around the world change every second. It is important not to be left out if you want development and progress not only for yourself and your family but also the whole community.

“The world around you is moving and it is moving fast and no one can stop it. It has and will continue to affect everybody including the Penan community. The obvious evidence is happening right now among the present or new generation of the Penan community who want to have a life like other citizens of the country such as dressing and having a lifestyle like others,” he said.

Thus, he told them that it is important for them to change their mindset and perspective so that they are able to bring socioeconomic changes to themselves and their area.

“You must be ready and prepared for change which comes with a lot challenges,” he reminded.

The three- day tournament saw Kevok A from Long Kevok emerge as overall champion and lift the Dennis Ngau Challenge Trophy while the team from Long Lilim was the champion in the women section and lifted the Temenggong Datuk Hasan Sui Challenge Trophy.

On another matter, Dennis noted that it is common for the youth in the community to marry at a young age.

“Try not to get married at a young age as you are still not mature and not ready to bring up a family. Think of the future. It would be hard for you to start a family if you don’t have a job and still depend on your parents,” he told the youth, while reminding their parents to discourage their children from marrying early.

On economy, Dennis advised the community to take up commercial farming for sustainable income besides making and selling handicraft to supplement their income.
