JKR told to be prepared for floods

-

KUCHING: The Works Ministry has ordered the state and district Public Works Department (JKR) to be prepared for any flood eventualities.

Its minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf said the department’s engineers have also been informed of the standard operating procedures (SOP) during floods and to monitor closely flood prone areas.

“We have come out with the SOP for JKR engineers so that they are always ready as well as to closely monitor the weather forecast,” he said when met at a mass circumcision programme at Kampung Matang Lot yesterday.

He added that the ministry has set up a disaster action room to monitor the situation from time to time, from 8am to 5pm daily.

He revealed that the government had also appointed a private company which would quickly repair landslides along road sides and cliffs to reduce risks to road users.

At the event, 33 boys left their childhood days by undergoing the religious ritual, under the Malaysian Army Jiwa Murni Programme.

The circumcision was performed by military doctors.

Aside from that, the army also provided dental service to the local villagers.

“We are thankful to the army for this corporate social responsibility for holding the event,” said Fadillah.

Eastern Field Commander Lt Gen Datuk Mohd Zaki Mokhtar was also present at the event.
