Churches can help address social problems, says Nanta
KAPIT: Churches have been called on to hold programmes that can help to address social problems.
Social problems could affect the harmonious family institution and thus we must not allow them to happen. — Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi pointed out that youths are easy targets for drug abuse and other social ills.
“Social problems could affect the harmonious family institution and thus we must not allow them to happen,” he said after joining a service at the Bukit Goram Methodist Iban Church recently.
He said church youth fellowships or camps could help strengthen the discipline and moral conduct of youths.
Nanta also allocated RM1,000 for the church to hold a youth camp.
Church committee chairman Langit Sengkuai said the church is expanding rapidly and the building has become too congested.
“Our board of management has decided to extend the existing building to cater to the everincreasing members during the Sunday Services.
“We plan to erect a new hall measuring 20 feet by 36 feet through a gotong-royong project. We’ll buy the materials and do the work ourselves to save costs,” he said.
Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat had presented an RM30,000 grant for concrete beams as well as funds to cement the carpark in front of the church; while Nanta had presented an RM50,000 grant for the roofing and walls.
