Police smash ‘Geng Wan’, recover 3 bikes worth RM140,000

KUCHING: Police recovered three bicycles worth RM140,000 following the arrest of three persons, believed to be members of theft gang, here last week.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said the breakthrou­gh came following the arrest of a 38-year-old gang member at Kampung Triso on Nov 30, which led to the recovery of one of the bikes.

“Acting on informatio­n obtained from the first suspect, we picked up two other suspects, aged 49 and 43 years, at two separate areas – Kampung Hulu Beladin on Dec 2 and Kampung Tabuan Foochow the same day – where the two remaining bikes were found.

“Police also seized various items including tools believe to be used for house breaking,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He said the three men – two of whom are fishermen and the other, jobless – were members of ‘Geng Wan’ who stole the bicycles on Nov 26.

The suspects have been remanded for four days until Dec 7 to facilitate investigat­ion under Section 379 of the Penal Code, he added.

Separately, Abang Ahmad said police detained a 19-yearold man after he attempted to assault a policeman with a wooden stick while running amok along Jalan Semarak, here yesterday.

The incident, which went viral on social media, took place around 9.30am when the suspect attempted to attack members of the public at Medan Selera.

“A patrol vehicle was dispatched to the scene where the suspect was reported to be acting aggressive­ly while armed with a weapon.

“Upon arriving at the location, the police personnel were attacked by the man using a wooden stick, but managed overpower and subdue the suspect,” said Abang Ahmad, adding the suspect has been detained to facilitate investigat­ion.
