SheFights: Teaching women, children art of self-defence

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Realising the ever challenging environment facing women and children, a group of five friends is providing lessons on the basic art of self- defence.

Through ‘SheFights’, which was formed early this year, the five friends held seminars on the art of self-defence, which also include theory and practical training classes, for children and women.

The seminars are held at universities and with the collaboration of the corporate sector. SheFights founder, Faeznur Farok, 26, or ‘Benny’ , said it was time for women and children to be taught the art to prevent them from any untoward incidence.

“Lately, wearebeingfedwithnews that are scary, such as abduction and rape. So, the knowledge is important for them. We also teach children as young as three-yearsold,” she told Bernama at the ‘Stop Abuse For Everyone, For A Safer and Fearless Environment’ (Safe) organised by the Puteri Umno Legal, Professional and NonGovernment Organisation (NGO) Bureau at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

The campaign is aimed at enhancing public awareness on fighting child abuse, especially sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, SheFights cofounder Nizam Asri, 25, said through the art of self- defence, women and children were taught to protect themselves in certain ways without using physical strength like punching.

“For women, we teach them to poke the eyes, or hit hard at the neck or heart, or to step hard on the foot, if attacked from behind, while the children are told to shout and hold on to the attacker’s legs,” he said. — Bernama
