Rep tells parents to motivate without pressuring their children

-

KUCHING: Parents should not force their children to do the impossible, especially in studies, as this may cause them to throw in their towel at the end of the day.

Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang acknowledged that though it is important for the younger generation to set a high standard in studies, they may eventually stop trying if faced with challenges or setbacks they cannot overcome.

“Don’t pressure our children to study medicine just because they are in the science stream. Instead reassure them so in due time, they know what they want to do.

“Let us all keep encouraging our young people and motivate them to strive for excellence,” he said at the ‘Malem Tibah Haman’ and pre- Christmas dinner of Sarawak Kayan Women Association ( PWKS) held at Thian Court here on Tuesday.

The dinner aims to recognise Kayan students who excelled in the national exams last year.

Wilson, representing Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, said as parents, they have to continuously support their children.

“If they fail, teach them how to get back on their feet as failure is not forever. It’s still a lesson as success is working from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm,” he stressed.

He commended PWKS for organising the event which shows their concern for the community, particularly supporting the younger generation to strive for educational excellence - be it in academics or co- curricular activities.

Event organising chairperson Silvia Robinson said the association first organised this incentive last year to reward Kayan students who excelled in studies at various levels of examinations.

“As a caring society and in line with our efforts to give back to society, we see the need for continued support for our students, and we will be holding this event on an annual basis from now on.”

A total of 16 Kayan students received incentives handed over by Wilson in the presence of PWKS chairperson Roselyn L Lah and Silvia.

Wilson informed that he would be pledging RM5,000 to the association while Ugak pledged RM10,000.
