Be united to progress, Kiputs told

KUALA TUTOH, Baram: The Kiputs are urged to be united in their struggle to be a developed and progressiv­e community.

Deputy Speaker of State Legislativ­e Assembly and Mulu assemblyma­n Datuk Gerawat Gala said the community must also assist each other to achieve their common objectives and bring about positive changes to Kuala Tutoh.

“Being united means our voices will be heard although we are a minority in this land,” he told the about 1,000 people at the closing ceremony of the ‘ 100 years of Roman Catholic Church in Kuala Tutoh’ recently.

He said the event was a reflection of their achievemen­t and history over the last 100 years.

“It also provides the local people and their leaders an opportunit­y to sit together and plan their direction and future in the next 100 years.

“You cannot undo the past but you can inf luence the future of Kuala Tutoh and the Kiput community. Have faith in God and work hard and pray hard for a brighter future,” he told them.

At the event, Gerawat announced an allocation of RM35,000 from his MRP fund to repair the Kuala Tutoh Church next year.

Bishop of Miri Richard Ng, organising chairman Michael Tuah Ding, a political secretary to the chief minister Charles Balan Seling, Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini, Fr Andy Lee of Long Lama, Penghulu Herbert Lawai Ipoi and KK Victor Wak Pasoh were among those present at the event.
