Over 200 volunteers set for 2017 Sukan Sarawak

KUCHING: Volunteers for the upcoming 2017 Sukan Sarawak (Suksar) are ready for duty for the various games from Dec 14 to 17.

A press statement on Wednesday said over 200 general and technical volunteers have been recruited for the games.

They comprised people from all walks of li fe including profession­als as well as those who had previously served during the 18th Malaysia Games ( Sukma) held in the state last year.

The volunteers, who come from over the state including Kapit, Mukah, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Samarahan and Kuching, have undergone briefing and training sessions organised by the Suksar technical committee headed by Ahmad Rodzli and assisted by officials from Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n ( SSC) as well as Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS).

They will render services at the various competitio­n venues while some are also involved in data entry of the Integrated Games Management System ( IGMS).

SSC is working closely with the Modernisat­ion Unit of Sarawak State Administra­tion ( UPPN) and Sarawak Informatio­n Systems Sdn Bhd ( Sains) for the use of IGMS - the online event and athlete management system - to facilitate the smooth running of the games.

Over 1,000 athletes and officials will be expected converge at the Sarawak Sports Complex from Dec 13.

Athletes and coaches from the four participat­ing zones are scheduled to check into the Suksar Games Village located at Rafflesia College of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Kota Samarahan.

The opening ceremony for the 2017 Suksar is on Dec 14 at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya and members of the public are invited to witness the proceeding­s starting from 7pm.

The closing ceremony will also be held at the same venue on Dec 17. Entrance for the both occasions is free of charge.

The main venue for the various competitio­ns will be the Sarawak Sports Complex in Petra Jaya while Petanque will be held in Santubong, weightlift­ing at MBKS Stadium of Jalan Pending, 7-a-side rugby at Song Kheng Hai Ground, badminton at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) campus and muaythai at Summer Mall, Kota Samarahan.
