Johor policeman detained for suspected bribery

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission ( MACC) detained a policeman in Kulai for suspicion of soliciting and receiving bribes from a religious teacher.

According to a source, the 49-year- old suspect with the rank of corporal, is stationed at the Kulai District Headquarters ( IPD) Crime Investigation Department.

The source said the suspect was arrested in a car repair workshop at about 9.30pm to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

The suspect was alleged to have received RM3,000 from a religious teacher as an inducement to settle an investigation on a drug case involving him being carried out by the Narcotics Department of Kulai IPD.

Following the arrest, a MACC investigation team conducted a search at two different locations in Johor and seized a bank account and several related documents.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which provides for a fine of five times the value of the bribery or RM10,000, whichever is higher and a jail term not exceeding 20 years upon conviction.

Johor MACC director Dato Azmi Alias when contacted confirmed the arrest and said the suspect would be remanded for one week until Dec 13.

The remand order was issued by Johor Bahru Subordinate Court assistant registrar Faridatul Farrah Mohd Shukri. — Bernama
