KCGCCI members meet TM on development plans, digital economy collaboration

-

KUCHING: The Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce & Industry ( KCGCCI) Digital Economy Standing Committee, led by the chamber’s president Tan Jit Kee, paid a courtesy visit to Telekom Malaysia (TM) Sarawak headquarters at Jalan Simpang Tiga here yesterday.

The delegation was welcomed by TM Sarawak assistant general manager Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff.

During the visit, Tan expressed his hope of working together with TM for the common good of KCGCCI members as well as for the development of the state’s digital economy.

He also opined that on the advent and advantages of smart business and smart building, it would be better to install fiber lines and broadband services at the construction stage rather than after the completion of a building as this would save cost and time.

He also expressed his concerns on the costs and timing on the installation of fiber lines or broadband services, particularly for commercial development.

He thus called on the TM team to assist in speeding up the relevant procedures as well as to find ways to reduce the cost for installation, including the required man holes which are also “too many and too expensive.”

KCGCCI Digital Economy Standing Committee chairman Rodger Chan said the purpose of the chamber’s visit was to present feedback to TM as well as to find out the latest development plans and initiatives of TM.

The other objective, he added, was to explore on collaborating with TM on organising seminars and courses to raise awareness and enhance knowledge and skills on digital economy for the much needed capacity building.

This would, in turn, encourage more participation and uptake of business digitisation and e- commerce by the business community for the betterment of Sarawak’s digital economy, which is championed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Meanwhile, Jafer appreciated the constructive feedback given by KCGCCI members and explained that TM uses special funding from the federal government to install broadband in areas as per directed by the government.

In Kuching, broadband installation projects in Petra Jaya, Tabuan Jaya, Kuching city, Stampin, Pending and Penrissen are still ongoing.
