Annual CNY bazaar to feature charity run to benefit dialysis centre

MIRI: The 15th edition of the Chinese New Year Bazaar scheduled from Feb 9-15 next year will incorporat­e charity as part of its agenda.

The organisers will hold its first charity run as part of the event on Feb 10, with part of the proceeds going to Miri Kidney Dialysis Centre.

“Our target is 1,000 people taking part in the 5km charity run, paying registrati­on fee of RM65 each, with RM20 going to Miri Kidney Dialysis Centre.

“We appeal to members of the public to support the bazaar and take part in the charity run,” run organising chairman Johnson Wee told reporters after calling on Mayor Adam Yii at Miri City Council ( MCC) yesterday.

Bazaar, the bazaar will continue to be a major attraction not only for locals, but for tourists as well.

He said an average of RM50,000 was required annually to organise the bazaar which, among other things, will showcase the Chinese community’s traditions and culture during the daily entertainm­ent programme from 7pm to 11pm.

There will also be stalls selling various goodies ranging from food and drinks to items needed for the Chinese New Year celebratio­n.

The run is organised by Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( MCCCI) together with MCC, the police, Public Works Department, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Miri District chapter, Miri Parking System ( MPS) and People’s Volunteer Corps ( Rela).

Yii, meanwhile, commended MCCCI and its collaborat­ors for initiating the run as part of the list of activities during the weeklong bazaar.

“The new initiative is very commendabl­e as it has the less fortunate members of society in their hearts, while also provide an avenue for business and entertainm­ent to attract both tourists and locals,’ he said.

Joining Wee for the courtesy call were members of the organising committee comprising MCCCI members led by chairman Lee Khoi Yun as well as representa­tives from various Lions clubs in Miri.
