Niosh chief gets sixth honorary doctorate
SIBU: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health ( Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been awarded with an honorary doctorate from Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) in recognition of his contribution to the community through social work.
It is learnt that it was Lee’s sixth honorary doctorate.
He had previously received Honorary Doctorate Of Laws from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2000, Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak in 2002, Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy ( Social Work) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah in 2012, Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy ( Human Resource Development) from Universiti Tenaga Nasional in 2013, and Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy ( Community and Unity) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia last year.
Lee received the Honorary Doctorate in Social Work from AMU Chancellor Gen ( Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin at the university’s 11th convocation in Serdang.
In his acceptance speech, Lee reminded the graduates to embrace the core values of excellence, discipline, integrity, mutual respect, confidence, openness in communications and humility.
“Put them into practice now and in the future irrespective of what profession you are in. Challenging times are transient but values stand the test of time.”
He told the students that academic excellence was only part of their achievement.
They must also improve their skills in other areas such as interpersonal and problem-solving skills and individual creativity, he added.
Lee said in the face of globalisation, the country’ s future and prosperity would depend not just on intellectual minds, but also on the creativity to handle tasks and problems.
In this regard, he emphasised to the graduates that they must also be flexible, adaptable, as well as be able to communicate and cooperate, apart from being creative thinkers, researchers and lifelong students – in order for the country to compete effectively in the globalised and borderless world.
Lee currently holds various positions, namely 1Malaysia Foundation trustee, senior vice- chairman of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation and patron of Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
