Sports and recreational activities enhance health
MIRI: Sports and recreational activities enhance the overall health of the people besides being tourism products.
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said holding sports and recreational activities throughout the year enable different strata of society to take part.
“With many activities from sports to culture being held throughout the year in Miri City, cosmopolitan Mirians can take part in events that keep them fit.
Such events attract tourists of various nationalities and backgrounds,” Lee said when closing the district-level Solidarity Cycling 1.0 at Luak Esplanade yesterday .
Sibuti MP Datuk Ahmad Lai Bujang flagged off the event and took part in the aerobic session followed by a cycling event and cleaning of the esplanade.
Present were Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Mayor Adam Yii, Miri District Officer and event organising chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf and senior government officers.
Lee said the cycling event at the Esplanade promoted the park as a place for recreational and sports activities.
He disclosed that Miri City Council (MCC) had agreed that next year improved facilities would include a children’s playground.
Ahmad Lai concurred with Lee on the importance of sports and recreational activities, saying they enhance solidarity among the multi-racial society besides promoting health.
“Realising the importance, the government encouraged Malaysians to prioritise a healthy lifestyle for a progressive and productive society,” he said.
Over 70 local cyclists took part in the 20km ride which took off and ended at Luak Esplanade.
All participants finished the ride and received finishing medals and t-shirts.
There were lucky draws for the cyclists and organisers: Miri District Office, Miri Cycling Association, Fire and Rescue Department and the Police.
