KUCHING: The critical facilities at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) will be upgraded and more parking spaces will be created in three years’ time.

Once completed, the upgraded SGH will have a day- care and diagnostic centre ( DCODC), two multi- storey carpark complexes, a medi-hotel and canteen.

Designed with improved amenities and capacity, the new buildings and facilities would help to ease the current congestion, said Asaljuru Weida Sdn Bhd (AWSB) project director Jason Ng.

Ng said the DCODC would house seven operating theatres ( OTs), a daycare consultation and surgery, Endoscopy Suite, as well as consolidated central laboratories.

“Two multi- storey parking structures with a total of 1,700 parking bays will also be constructed. For outstation visitors, the 160-room medi-hotel offers convenient accommodation for family members and is supported by a food court and nine commercial outlets,” said Ng, adding that the upgrading works are on- going.

The public welcome the solution to road congestion and lack of parking spaces that have besieged patients, staff and visitors all these years.

During a random interview conducted recently, most people said they dreaded the traffic jam and lack of parking spaces.

A medical assistant attached at the Accident and Emergency Unit, Andrew Leong, suggested that the solution to road congestion would be the setting up lots of entry points, on top of having lots of parking spaces at SGH.

“I have been working here for four years plus and I often see long queues of cars rushing into SGH. Drivers would go round and round the area just to look for ( parking) spaces,” he said.

A 26-year- old Mexican medical student Tess Nunes said it would be good to have more affordable hostels available nearby in the future, not only for the students but also the families of patients.

Besides that, it would also be good to have better public transport system, she added.

A member of the public Hasbi Mohd Zen and a painter at a project in SGH, Hip Jen said they had to drive for more than 30 minutes around the hospital just to get a parking space.

They would have to pay if they park outside the SGH area and risk getting summons from the police if they park illegally.
