MIRI: The request by a handicapped person, Wee Hock Khim from Tudan Phase 2 here, to widen the wooden plank walk from his house to the main road has got the attention of UPP Pujut and Persatuan Warisan Anak Sarawak, Miri branch.

UPP Pujut chief Bruce Chai said family members had to carry Wee out from the house to the main road every time he needed to go to the clinic for medical treatment as the plank walk was too narrow and could not accommodate his wheelchair.

“Wee is suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and can’t walk and has been bedridden for the last three years,” Bruce told The Borneo Post after visiting Wee at his home in Tudan Phase 2 yesterday.

According to Bruce, the case was brought to his attention by Persatuan Warisan Anak Sarawak when he was invited to the official opening of its Miri branch last Wednesday.

“The 70-foot long plank walk can’t accommodate his wheel chair and Wee is requesting us to widen it,” Bruce said.

He added that UPP Pujut is seeking donations from the public to construct the plank walk which it would do together with Persatuan Warisan Anak Sarawak.

At the same time, Bruce said UPP Pujut Service Centre would help Wee to apply for Socso benefit and also to register with the Welfare Department, E-kasih and other welfare schemes to get assistance to repair Wee’s house which is in bad shape.

He said this was the first joint social welfare activity between UPP Pujut and Persatuan Warisan Anak Sarawak and more joint activities would be organised in future.

Members of the public who wish to contribute to the reconstruction of the plank walk can contact UPP Pujut Service Centre.
