Sarawak Garden set up at Curtin University in Perth
MIRI: The new Sarawak-inspired garden at Curtin University in Western Australia is meant to provide a special connection to both students and staff of the campus here.
The main campus at Perth recently hosted a special event to showcase this new feature to Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) pro- chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and other members of the Curtin Malaysia board of directors.
According to Curtin University vice- chancellor Prof Deborah Terry, the garden – created by members of the Perth campus’ ‘ Public Places Team’ – houses plants and shrubs indigenous to Sarawak region.
“Over the past 18 years, Curtin Malaysia has played a crucial role in the university’s global presence and its institutional strengths have enhanced our international reputation,” she said.
“This garden also serves as a tribute to the dedicated people at Curtin Malaysia who through the years, have worked hard to build its reputation both within Malaysia and internationally and also have helped Curtin establish a firm foothold in the region.
“We are pleased that Curtin Malaysia is today an institution that the whole of Curtin and our respective nations can be proud of.”
Meanwhile Dr Chan, on behalf of Curtin Malaysia, said he was very honoured to have such a beautifully landscaped garden in Perth dedicated to it (Sarawak).
“The garden is beyond representing the campus in Miri and is a fitting tribute to the campus’ founders, both in Sarawak and in Western Australia, who had the bold vision of creating Curtin’s first international campus in the state and making it an institution of transforming influence and en during significance.”
