Don’t hog parking spots — DBKU

-

KUCHING: The ‘ invasion’ of parking lots by placing barriers across them, as what is being done by some business owners currently, will no longer be tolerated.

Compla i nt s ab out such inconsiderate practice have been received, especially in business areas such as Jalan Satok and Jalan Kulas, as well as the new business districts.

The Kuching Nor th City Commission ( DBKU) is in the process of getting the area gazetted as a car park, where the parking lots can be on a fi rst- come, fi rstserved basis.

“We are asking for cooperation from all parties in sharing this facility as a selfish attitude can frustrate other motorists, and owners of business premises doing this may end up losing their customers in the process,” said DBKU.

It also said legal action could be taken against those ‘hogging’ the parking spaces – possibly being charged under Article 18 (1) The City of Kuching North (Cleanliness By Laws), and under Article 20 (1) of Road Transport ( Provision of Parking Places) (City of Kuching North) Order 2005.

On this, DBKU suggested the city folk work together towards solving the problem.

Additionally, DBKU would no longer allow traders to run food stalls on five-foot ways in areas under its jurisdiction without permission, effective next month.

The ban would be enforced under Article 26 ( 2)( a) of Local Authorities ( Cleanliness) ByLaws 1999, which states that food preparation or cooking on fivefoot ways is prohibited unless permission is sought from the local authorities.

“This move is to ensure that the cleanliness of premises and the food prepared would be at the best level. This is also to ensure safety of people walking along the fivefoot ways,” said DBKU.

First-time offenders would face a fine of RM1,500, while repeat offenders would face a RM3,000 fine or nine months’ jail – or both.

“All owners or licensees of food premises are given three months to ensure that the stalls stay within the premises and not on five-foot ways.” Contact the DBKU Licensing Division on 082-234654 / 082-234657 for details.
