KUALA LUMPUR: As part of its commitment to operating Incident & Injury Free, property and infrastructure solutions provider Lendlease shared an update on the Safety Supervisor Apprenticeship Programme ( SSAP) and unveiled a range of health and safety initiatives being implemented on the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) Lifestyle Quarter project.
The initiatives are in line with creating a culture of care on the project site, improving the overall safety performance of the project and broader industry.
To enhance safety standards in Malaysia, Lendlease and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) have been collaborating on the SSAP since 2016.
According to its press statement, the programme provides theoretical and on-site training to apprentices, and is the first formal apprenticeship partnership between the public and private sectors in Malaysia that aims to empower future safety leaders.
Lendlease Malaysia managing director Dinesh Nambiar said: “This unique programme, the first of its kind in Malaysia, was established in collaboration with CIDB in an effort to groom future construction safety managers through structured training modules.
“Lendlease will continue to support the Malaysian government’s initiatives to raise the bar for safety and wellbeing standards in the industry.”
CIDB Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Ir Ahmad ‘ Asri Abdul Hamid added: “We are pleased to partner with Lendlease who operates an exemplary level of safety standards and procedures.
“We are confident that the SSAP apprenticeship programme will further enhance the highest standards of quality, safety and professionalism in Malaysia’s construction industry as we seek to develop an effective, highly skilled workforce and enhance employability among Malaysian youth.
“This is also part of public and private sector collaboration in support of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme.”
After passing the exams and interviews for the Site Safety Supervisor ( SSS) course run by the National Institute Of Occupational Safety And Health (NIOSH) Malaysia (required under the Department of Occupational Safety And Health ( DOSH)), graduates will receive a Site Safety Supervisor Qualification (Yellow Book).
This will in turn enhance the employability and marketability of the apprentice.
Following two successful apprentice intakes, recruitment is underway for the third batch of apprentices to come on board in February 2018.
Four from the first batch of apprentices commenced work on the TRX Lifestyle Quarter in October 2017.
The second batch of apprentices is undergoing their 12- month training programme, which commenced in July 2017.
It is envisaged that 150 apprentices will be trained over a five- year period under the programme.
2 3 - year- o l d F i t t r y yana is the first female from the apprentice programme, and is currently deployed on the TRX Lifestyle Quarter project as Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Administrator and Safety Supervisor.
She said, “Despite being the only female, training under the SSAP programme this past year has given me the strength and confidence to perform on equal footing in this male-dominated industry.
The key to succeed is to set realistic goals and be willing to learn, and I hope that I will be able to inspire other females who are thinking about applying for a place in the SSAP.”
In line with operating Incident & Injury Free, technology is employed on the TRX Lifestyle Quarter project site to enhance safety monitoring.
Through the use of drones, site surveillance can be improved, which enhances construction planning and safety.
The footage also enables all on the project to be updated on the latest progress, logistics and changing site conditions. Turn to Page B4, Col 1
