MP reminds residents to watch out for rising water levels

MIRI: Due to the uncertain weather, people living in lowlying and flood-prone areas must watch out for rising water levels.

This is to ensure that they have sufficient time to move to higher ground and save their properties from being destroyed by floods, Sibuti MP Datuk Ahmad Lai Bujang said.

“Some low-lying areas in Sibuti parliamentary constituency are easily flooded and we hope the residents are cautious about the situation,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

On Dec 15, the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a warning on heavy rain as well as strong winds in Limbang and Miri areas until today.

Ahmad Lai also advised all residents living at the riverside and beaches to be on guard for bad weather.

“The floods and strong winds will destroy properties, so people need to follow instructions if they are directed to move to safe areas,” he said.

At the same time, he advised the public to comply with traffic rules and regulations and be extra careful when driving in bad weather to return to their hometowns for Christmas.

With the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway ongoing some roads would be very busy, he added.

“Drivers must comply with road laws so that traffic movement is smooth and be cautious about the weather, plan your trip well and do not rush
