Brunei wushu team impress on opening day
KUCHING: Brunei put up a strong display on the first day of the 1st Sarawak International Wuwang Cup Invitation Championship at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya yesterday.
The 15- strong Brunei team is leading in the medal tally with eight gold, four silver and three bronze medals (as at 6pm yesterday) with Mohd Adi Salihin Roslan bagging two golds in the optional nanquan ( 9.21 points) and optional nandao (9.05).
Brunei’s other golds were delivered by Basma Lachkar in the optional taijiquan, Koh Yun C in Group B nanquan, Sherissa Lim Wan Chi in Group B changquan, Eticsson Bong Cheng Loong in Group C changquan and Group C gunshu and Nur Batrisya Ripin in Group B nanquan. In second place were the 11- member Sarawak ( Sukma) team with seven gold, seven silver and two bronze.
Singapore, who fielded three athletes, only turned up with two male athletes and one of them is unable to continue after injuring his leg in the morning event.
A total of 146 athletes from Brunei, Sarawak, Singapore, Kuching, Miri, Sarikei and Sibu are taking part in championship organised by Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) and supported by Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak State Sports Council.
In his opening speech, WFS president Allen Wong Siew Poh urged all participants to display good sportsmanship and give their best in the championship.
“For those who win, don’t get carried away by your achievements but instead be humble and continue to train hard to scale greater heights.
“As for those who do not win, work and try harder and come back to compete again next year,” said Wong who is also the event organising chairman.
Among the invited guests were Lily Yong and Chung Hua Middle School No 3 principal Lee Chee Beng.
