Lions Club organises medical check-up for longhouse folk
MIRI: Lions Club of Batu Niah and Alam Bumi Palm Oil Mill Sdn Bhd jointly organised rural medical services cum early Christmas celebration for about 600 longhouse residents in Suai recently.
Led by general physician Dr. Previn Chandran, Lions Club of Batu Niah’s Medical Rural Community Services team offered health checks on body mass index ( BMI), blood glucose and blood pressure as well as pap smear for the female residents.
President of Lions Club of Batu Niah, Ting Ling, in her welcoming speech expressed gratitude to Alam Bumi Palm Oil Mill Sdn Bhd and the longhouse residents for their cooperation.
“For your information, this is our seventh health screening and it is important to make it a success in line with Lion’s Club’s motto of serving and caring for those in need, especially medical attention.
“This is certainly a great opportunity to raise health awareness and we hope our small effort would help people around Suai area to live healthier and happier lives,” she said.
Ting also took the opportunity to mention the club’s fi rst vision screening of the year on Nov 25 held in collaboration with Alam Bumi Palm Oil Mill where 10 longhouses with 130 residents received eye check-up.
“Of the number, 90 residents were in need of corrective spectacles due to various reasons including myopia (or near- sightedness), hyperopia (or farsightedness), dry eyes, glaucoma and cataract.”
Prior to the launch held at Alam Bumi’s multipurpose hall, Alam Bumi chairman, Temenggong Datuk Hassan Sui lauded the Lions Club for their dedication in reaching out to the rural community.
“When it comes to health care, the natives in rural areas are disadvantaged due to the distance from the nearest medical centre. Therefore, Lions Club has done a great service to rural folks,” he said in his opening speech.
Apart from the health screening, a simple Christmas celebration was also held where food, dry goods and clothes were given out.
Also present at the event were Alam Bumi Palm Oil Mill Sdn Bhd executive director Dato Sri Lau Hieng Su, senior mill manager George Akam, and Temenggong Wilson Atong.
