446 compounds issued under dengue-control law

SIBU: The state Health Department has issued 446 compounds under the Destructio­ns of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 as part of its measures in dealing with the dengue menace.

According to its statement released yesterday, all these compounds had been settled. It is learned that the original amount was RM226,000, but following the appeals for reduction by those issued with the compounds, the total amount collected was, 630.

The department was responding to The Borneo Post yesterday on questions pertaining to the dengue situation in the state.

It said for the period between Jan 1 and Dec 24 this year, a of 68,535 premises across the state underwent inspection­s to identify potential breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito.

“From the total, 2,475 premises – or 3.6 per cent – were found to be breeding Aedes (mosquito).” It added that the common breeding grounds were mostly man-made such as plastic containers (10.2 per cent), pails ( 9.7 per cent),

barrels ( 7.8 per cent), tyres ( 6.1 per cent) and empty cans ( 5.7 per cent).

The Health Department also said the state recorded 940 dengue cases between Jan 1 and Dec 24 this year.

“The cumulative dengue cases in Sarawak for 2017 registered a drop of 1,789 cases – or 65.6 per cent – from those recorded in 2016.” In locality breakdown for the same period this year, the department said Sibu had the most cases – at 138, followed by Kuching (125 cases), Betong ( 51 cases), Bintulu ( 50 cases) and Sarikei (47 cases).

On deaths resulting from dengue fever in Sarawak this year, the department said the number remained at four.
