Spare thought for those at several flood relief centres

-

LIMBANG: Many people here had to give Christmas revelry a miss this year as they had to spend the occasion in four flood relief centres.

Resident Datu Maria Hasman said the flood victims were evacuated to three relief centres in Limbang and one in Trusan.

He said this when officiating at the opening of a Christmas and Ushering of the New Year at Dewan Bunga Raya here yesterday. The event was jointly organised by Limbang District Office and St Edmund’s Catholic Church.

“Let us spare a thought for those in the districts who were unable to celebrate Christmas and to usher the New Year,” he said yesterday.

Limbang Deputy District Officer Hamidah Halpi, organising chairman Peter Purok, and Temenggong Ang Kheng Su were also present.

Maria added that although the f lood had receded, the people affected still had to clean their houses and compound of the mud and dirt brought by the flood waters.

He said Limbnag was fortunate as it has a harmonious society who are race and religion-blind.

He hoped that the development planned for Limbang such as the Pan Borneo highway, waterfront upgrading, second Limbang bridge and other high-impact projects would be successfully rolled out to transform the local landscape.

Hamidah, who also spoke, said the programme was aimed at enhancing cooperation, tolerance and mutual understanding of the people from various races and religions in the district.
