MIRI: Telekom Malaysia ( TM) will provide more areas here with WiFi as part of efforts to give greater internet connectivity to the community.

TM Miri, Limbang and Bintulu area manager Sharifah Bahiyah Ibrahim said this following the launch of WiFi at Senior Citizen Street, Persiaran Kabor.

“Due to increasing demand, at the moment, TM has provided free WiFi services at 10 areas including TM’s office, the area near Permaisuri Imperial City Mall and IBS college with 4 mbps (megabits per second) of internet speed.

“However, beginning Jan 1, users who wish to have access to these WiFi services need only pay 10 sen per hour. Still, I must say that it is very affordable

compared to those who have to access the internet at public places,” she said.

Sharifah Bahiyah added a team may be assigned to assist users at Senior Citizen Street on how to use the WiFi service.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who launched the service, thanked TM for improving internet connectivity here.

“I was approached by the people here (Senior Citizen Street) with requests for free WiFi about two months ago, and their reason for it is as simple as to able to stay connected with their family and extended family, who live outside of Miri.

“Some of them, I believe, do not have internet connectivity at home, therefore, such a request must not be overlooked,” he said.

Five network points have been installed around Senior Citizen Street.

“Though I was informed that the free WiFi service would be until Dec 31, I do hope that TM could extend the time, so that the senior citizens could adjust to the service,” added Lee.
