Sibu Tower Run to be back with a vengeance next year

- By Philip Wong reporters@theborneopost.com

SIBU: One of the toughest run that will test runners to their limits is coming back with a vengeance on March 11, 2018.

The second edition of Sibu Tower Run 2018 is certainly only for the fittest as the 5km distance will include running 2 rounds around Sibu Town Square Phase I and II, Chuan Corridor, LKH Hospital Memorial Museum and the waterfront before going up to the top of the 28- storey 126m high Wisma Sanyan, where the race will end.

Organised by Underground Runners Sibu ( UGR) Club in collaboration with Sibu Municipal Council, the run will fl ag off from Sibu Town Square in front of Wisma Sanyan, Sarawak tallest building at 6.30am.

See Hua Group comprising of The Borneo Post, See Hua Daily News and Utusan Borneo, is the main media partner.

UGR chairman Zamri Kiprawi said the objective is to raise the profi le of Sibu internationally and also to sharpen the skills of the runners in this unique sport. He said the event is divided into four category – Men’s and Women’s Open and Veteran sections.

“Anybody who is fit, healthy or a good marathon runner is welcomed to take up the challenge.”

However, Zamri cautioned that he race is not for the weak as it will require good stamina, perseverance and endurance to complete the run, especially when running up the stairs. He said for safety reasons, the run is limited to only 350 participants.

“Last year, we rejected a lot of runners as it was limited to 300 runners. This year, we decided to increase the participants to 350 as we anticipate good response.” To avoid disappointment, he reminded the runners to register early.

“Response has been very positive ever since registration opened, with numerous enquiries from runners throughout the state,’ he added.

Entry fee for early birds who register before Jan 14, 2018 is RM70 per participant, RM80 for registration before Feb 4 and RM90 for those who register from Feb 4 onwards.

The champion will get RM800, first runner- up will get RM400, second runner-up will get RM300, third and fourth runners will get RM100 with RM50 for 6th to 10th positions. A certificate will also be given to all those who complete the full race. For further details, call Zamri on 0177534699, Deana 0194675988 or Andy 0168906486.

Meanwhile, SMC deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain said they are looking into the possibility of changing the date of Sibu Tower Run with KL Tower Run to attract more foreign participants.

“This is one way to promote Sibu to international runners but the participation of foreign runners may discourage local runners to take part. Anyway, the decision is not fi nal yet.”
