TM cable thief nabbed in Seberang Prai Tengah

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Villagers in Kampung Kuala Mengkuang, Kubang Semang here apprehende­d a man climbing a Telekom Malaysia (TM) cable pole Friday morning.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said residents patrolling the area saw the man on a TM pole and proceed to nab him at about 5.45am Friday.

“The villagers later informed the police of the incident and our inspection found the 28-year-old man was believed to be stealing Telekom Malaysia cable,” he said here yesterday.

He said investigat­ions found TM cables in the area were frequently stolen causing losses amounting to thousands of ringgit each month.

He said the man admitted to being involved in stealing TM cables in SPT and selling them to a friend.

Nik Ros Azhan said police were tracking down his friend to assist investigat­ions and the suspect was now remanded for four days.

The case was investigat­ed under Section 379 and 511 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, in another developmen­t, he said police were hunting for two men believed to be drug trafficker­s who fled, leaving behind drugs worth RM10,000 at an oil palm plantation in Machang Bubok here Friday.

He said in the 7pm incident, a team of policemen on a crime prevention round in the area saw two men on a motorcycle in the plantation behaving suspicious­ly.

“Police ordered them to stop but the men ran away leaving the motorcycle and some drugs believed to be heroin and syabu in the vehicle basket,” he said.

He said police believed they would be arresting the two men soon based on several leads including the abandoned motorcycle registrati­on number. — Bernama
