Fewer crime cases in Sibu last year — Police chief

SIBU: Sibu police chief ACP Zailanni Amit said Sibu recorded a drop of 46 cases which is 5.74 per cent in the crime index from Jan 1, 2017 until Dec 31,2017 compared to the previous year.

Speaking during his farewell parade at police headquarte­rs here yesterday, he said this had been achieved through the commitment and hard work of everyone.

“We have achieved the target that had been entrusted to us by the state police commission­er and all this was achieved because of the commitment from everyone,” he said. He also revealed that in curbing major criminal cases, police had arrested 23 subjects who were placed under Prevention of Crime Act 1959.

On narcotics cases, he revealed that they made 1,021 arrests throughout 2017. Of the number, 96 cases were categorise­d as supplier in which 18 were detained under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, one detained under Section 39A(2) of the same act and 77 detained under 39A(1) of the same act.

For drug possession­s, a total of 169 people were arrested where 159 were arrested under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for possessing synthetic drugs while 10 were arrested under Section 6 of the same act for possessing weed.

Meanwhile, 748 were arrested under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for drug abuse and two were arrested under Section 3 (1) of the Drug Addiction ( Treatment and Rehabilita­tion) Act. Six suspected drug dealers were arrested under Dangerous Drugs ( Special Preventive Measure) Act 1985. They are being detained in Simpang Rengam Moral Rehabilita­tion Centre in Johor.

He also said that throughout last year the commercial crime department had solved 12 job deceit cases which involved losses amounting to RM18,800.

The cases involved cheating the victims to give their money for jobs that did not exist. The suspect was arrested on Nov 8, 2017 and was charged with 12 counts of cheating. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to three years and five months imprisonme­nt and one stroke of whipping.

Zailanni who served as Sibu police chief from Sept 17, 2017 will be transferre­d to Kuching to serve as Sarawak Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) deputy chief.

He is replaced by ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit. In his farewell address, he urged the police force in Sibu to always improve themselves in terms of knowledge and to seek experience­s from various fields.

“We are living in a challengin­g world that is always demanding us to change our way of administra­tion and operations,” he pointed out, adding that they should continue to work hard as a team.

He also reminded them to always uphold the four focus or elements that were emphasised by Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Muhamad Fuzi Harun – back to basic, to rid off corruption in the force, to fight against gambling and to empower the ‘Intelligen­ce-Led-Policing’ concept.

“The focus aims at making the team stronger and to improve our image as police force. As policemen, we must have high integrity to improve our image and nation,” he said.

At the end of the parade, he presented certificat­e of appreciati­on to members of the police contingent.
