MIRI: Hundreds of visitors to Tusan beach in Bekenu have expressed their disappointment upon seeing the only footpath leading to the beach has collapsed, due to the impact from strong waves that have been hitting the shores over the past several days.

The beach, famous for its ‘Drinking Horse’ cliff and the ‘Blue Tears’ seawater phenomenon, is about a one-hour car journey from the city.

According to Yusri Ali, a resident of the nearby Kampung Terahad, the villagers have been waiting for the relevant authorities to replace the old footpath with a concrete stairway to make it easier and safer for people to reach the beach.

“Hundreds of visitors have no choice but to go back home after seeing the collapsed footpath. Some of them even risked danger by scaling along the steep cliff just to reach the beach.

“We have been waiting for the concrete staircase for so long, but it has yet to materialise,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

A Tusan Beach Stall Operators Committee member Mansor Antin also said the facilities there were found to be wanting.

“We, the food and drink stall operators, are earning less than before, despite the beach being a famous tourist attraction and included under the state’s tourism calendar as among the places to be in Sarawak.

“We appeal to the ministry-incharge to pump in some allocations to ensure that the facilities here, including the footpath, are well looked after.”

Meanwhile a visitor, Sainah Jamil, believed that if the problem remained unattended by the authorities concerned, visitors would not come back.

“I strongly believe that street lighting should be also provided at Tusan beach, so that visitors can also enjoy the beautiful scenery at night.”
