Members of running clubs pay courtesy call on MBKS mayor

KUCHING: Members of various running clubs in Kuching like City Jogger Club, UG Runner, Orang Utan Running Club and Hornbill Running Club recently paid a courtesy call on Kuching City South Mayor Dato James Chan Khay Syn.

The purpose of the visit was to convey their concerns over the safety of joggers which had been compromised by the ‘ playful attacks’ on joggers during the wee hours in recent months and also to discuss how this incident can be best addressed.

Chan advised that the joggers or cyclists must be careful and be mindful of their personal safety whenever they do activities in public places alone.

“On the enforcement of safety, the police had been informed by the council on the incidents,” said Chan in a press statement issued by Kuching South City Council ( MBKS) yesterday.

“The close cooperation between three parties; namely the public, local council and enforcement authority is most important and the council is happy to assist them to relate their concerns to the authority,” he added.

Chan urged the public to assist if they see suspicious motorcyclists stopping along the road side and if they spot their vehicle’s plate number, they should relay the information to the police.

He also said jogging areas around the city council’s compound would be lit up during the early hours of the morning.

He thanked the jogging clubs for taking initiative to engage and encourage the public to participate in the runs organised by them and for contributing greatly to the Healthy Cities Initiative by making Kuching City a better place.

Members of the running clubs hoped that relevant authorities like the police conduct more rounds of patrol at the reported hotspots to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Chan later presented mementos to members of the running clubs.
