Funds raised from bowling tourney to be used for community projects
KUCHING: The 5th Charity Bowling Tournament organised by the Rotary Club of Kuching Central ( Rotary International District 3310) at Riverside Superbowl on Jan 7 raised RM24,000.
“The money was raised through the generous sponsorship of participating companies and individuals in the tournament,” said event organising chairman Rotarian Tiong Khai in a press statement from Rotary Club of Kuching Central yesterday.
“This is the fifth year the Rotary Club of Kuching Central organised this fundraising event. We would like to thank the management of Riverside Superbowl for their continuing support of this event by sponsoring the venue.” he added.
Guest- of-honour Assistant Governor Dato Thomas Ngu in his welcoming speech before the event said the funds raised would be used to continue the many community projects of the Rotary Club of Kuching Central.
“Some of these projects include free eye screenings, cataract operations, solar and clean water systems, festive food parcels and more,” he disclosed
“Our projects are mainly focused on the local community, especially those from the lower income group or in rural areas.”
A total of 24 teams took part in the tournament, including two Rotary clubs outside Kuching.
The Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei which is one of the sister clubs of the Rotary Club of Kuching Central, emerged the 2018 champion with a total pinfall of 1,820.
Teams PCP and Eritel Telecommunication emerged second and third respectively.
Dominador Ortega Jr representing the Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan was named Top Male Bowler with a total pinfall of 512, while Dayang Salina of team PCP was Top Female Bowler with the highest combined score of 483 points.
The Rotary Club of Sarikei was the Best Dressed Team.
In addition to the charity bowling tournament, the Rotary Club of Kuching Central has since 2016 carried out several community projects, including over 200 free cataract operations for those in the lower income group or rural areas.
In conjunction with the new school year, the club recently handed out 1,029 school kits to students in various parts of Sarawak in collaboration with Yayasan Sime Darby and several other Rotary clubs.
Currently, the club is organising the Rotary Charity Run 2018 – Gift of Sight to raise funds for activities to prevent blindness such as the free cataract operations and free eye screenings.
