MCC uses comber machine to clean beaches
MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) has been using the beach comber machine since early Jan 1 in an effort to keep beaches in Miri clean in a fast and efficient way.
Though the machine is said to be able to reduce manpower, manual workers to pick up litter are still needed in areas unreachable by the machine.
According to Mayor Adam Yii, the machine is able to pick up all kinds of scrap such as broken glasses, plastic, cans and twigs and will operate once a week at four beaches on a rotational basis.
“The four beaches that will be using this beach comber on rotation are Luak Esplanade, Kuala Baram, Lutong and Beraya beach and the contractor has been assigned to do the cleaning job to ensure the cleanliness of the beaches.
“This is part of our effort to draw more tourists to Miri and at the same time we will try to get more funds to improve the facilities here,” he told reporters during his site visit to Luak Esplanade yesterday.
Yii added that other beaches would be cleaned using the machine as and when required only, thus any request to do the cleaning up should be applied through MCC.
Luak Esplanade is one of the popular spots for locals and tourists in Miri. It is usually packed especially during weekends and Yii hopes the public can play a part in helping to keep the beach clean.
“I am urging the public to work together in keeping our beaches clean as it is also our responsibility to maintain the attractiveness of the beaches and our environment so we can continue to enjoy clean beaches,” he said.
