SK Nanga Bon still closed as access road remains flooded

SIBU: SK Nanga Bon in Kemuyang here remained closed yesterday as the access road to the school was inundated by two-to-three feet of water.

The State Disaster Management Committee secretaria­t, in a press statement, said about 200 metres of the road was affected and inaccessib­le to vehicles as of noon yesterday.

SK Nanga Bon has 64 pupils, 12 teachers and three non-teaching staff.

The other four schools that remained closed yesterday were SK Sungai Bong ( Baram), SK Kuala Bok ( Baram) and SK Kuala Kenyana ( Mukah).

Separately, the water level at Batang Oya breached the alert level on Wednesday afternoon.

Tamin assemblyma­n Christophe­r Gira, when contacted, said the Sibu Resident’s Office and Selangau District Office were monitoring the situation.

“During this period, the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) will monitor the water level and report to the District Office.

“If there is an evacuation in Selangau area, it will be centralise­d at the multi-purpose hall in Selangau.

“Areas within Batang Oya will be at the multi-purpose hall in Sekuau or other community halls,” said Gira.

He added that for longhouses cut off from connectivi­ty due to flood, APM personnel will help to deliver food or other necessity items to the victims.
