Mother struggles to raise family on her own

-

LIMBANG: Raising singlehandedly a family with three school- going children is not an easy task for Kalsum Tamba who gets no assistance from her ailing husband.

However Kalsum, 36, from Penganan near here, perseveres so her children can get a good education like everyone else.

She is further challenged by having a husband who is mentally ill and has to undergo treatment in Sabah since last December.

With this and a meager salary as a cook, she assumes the role of head of the family and sole breadwinner, using assistance from the Welfare Department (JKM) to help pay for the expenses of her three schooling children.

Her struggles touched the hearts of members of the 1Malaysia Recreation Club ( KR1M), PDP Batu Danau, Baitulmal Fund and JKM.

KR1M chairman Lim Goon Tee said Kalsum’s mentally ill husband and dilapidated home drove them to act to relieve their sufferings.

Daily necessities and cash were handed over to Kalsum yesterday.

“Hopefully, the assistance rendered could alleviate Kalsum’s burden in raising her children.

“We will continue to go to the ground to locate those in need of assistance,” Goon Tee informed the media yesterday.

State PDP Youth Exco, Daniel Taha said his party would continue to work with the relevant government agencies to find the needy in the community.

“This collaboration is important to ensure our efforts to help them could be achieved in line with the government’s desire to track the needy,” he said yesterday.

He urged youths to be proactive in doing charity and community work to help the poor in Limbang District.

Also present were head of Baitulmal Fund Limbang, Junidi Lamat; officer from Limbang Islamic Religious Department, Mohd Farhan Simatzaman; Limbang welfare officer Monir Besar, Councillor Cecalia Lim and other community leaders.
