Eight centralised labour quarters to be built by 2020

-

SHAH ALAM: The Works Ministry is targeting to build at least eight centralised labour quarters (CLQ) by 2020, said its Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said the provision of the centralised labour quarters was in line with the strategic initiative of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020 in improving the status of labours’ living condition.

“With the establishment of this centralised quarters, we hope that there will be no more ‘kongsi’ houses being built at construction sites as they do not adhere to the standards set, inconducive and can tarnish the country’s image,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Earlier, he officiated the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd (CLAB) CLQ V built by CLAB, a subsidiary of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in Section U4 here yesterday.

Elaborating, Fadillah said the provision of a comfortable labour quarters was vital as currently there were 850,000 construction personnel at present.

Out of the 850,000 construction personnel, he said, 400,000 of them were foreign workers registered with CIDB comprising professionals, skilled workers and construction workers. CLAB CLQM V is the first one-stop centre that provides accommodation facilities to construction workers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and can accommodate 864 employees at any one time.

The gated infrastructure, which has six building blocks and 144 rooms, is also equipped with access card system, kitchen, laundry facilities, bathroom, cafeteria, grocery shop, sports facilities as well as places of worship. — Bernama
