KUCHING: Teachers are reminded the importance of teaching English language well to their students as English is the international medium of instruction.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in giving this reminder, said he was not belittling the national language but to remind the younger people the importance of English so that they could compete in the international arena later on.

“Even China has selection of universities that have changed their focus to English studies. Malaysia can’t be left behind. I thus hope our teachers can play their role well to teach English to their students,” he told reporters after handing out school bags to seven schools at his service centre in Satok yesterday.

The schools from his constituency were SK Bako, SK Beradek, SK Tanjung Bako, SK Rambungan Lundu, SK Siar Campuran Lundu, SK Sebat Lundu and SK Telok Melano Lundu. They received a total of 200 school bags.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, added that students must not only be able to communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English, but also in Mandarin.

He said Mandarin could come in handy for Malaysian youths who would have to deal with Chinese businessmen who are investing billions of ringgit in this country.

“Also, China is a source of millions of tourists to Malaysia. Those who can converse in Mandarin would be able to help in the growth of the local tourism industry by becoming tour guides.”
