MIRI: A life of poverty forced a 75-year- old grandmother to live in a dilapidated house with her two daughters and six grandchildren at Kampung Piasau Utara.

Rosi Migat, a widow, has been living in the house left by her late husband for the past 20 years.

“It was originally a two- storey house but the structure on the top floor was damaged and not safe for occupation.

“That is why we have no choice but cramp into the small space at the ground floor of the house.”

She shared her plight during a house visit by Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting yesterday.

At the moment, the family has to rely on her grandson who does odd jobs.

Her daughters, both single mothers with young children, supplement their income by selling scrap metal they collect from the rubbish bins for recycling.

Ting would assist the grandmother to register and get welfare assistance besides making arrangement to build a decent house for Rosi and her family.

He would also assist one of her granddaughters who has stopped schooling at Form Two as the family couldn’t afford her education.

Ting called on community leaders to play an active role and work with respective local representatives to address the welfare needs of deserving people in their villages.

Also present was the village chief of Kampung Piasau Utara, Ketua Kaum Hipni Sulong.
