Samsung’s new and innovative Galaxy A8 faces tough competition

-

PRESENTED a few days ago at CES in Las Vegas, the Galaxy A8 is the first smartphone in Samsung’s Galaxy A range to get an edge-to- edge display, a dual front camera and support for the Gear VR headset. Priced around the 500 ( RM2,400) mark, rivals at a similar price point include the OnePlus 5T and Honor View 10, both of which have plenty of enticing features.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 has a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with an 18.5: 9 aspect ratio. At the front, a dual camera (sixteen-and eight-Megapixels) lets users take closely framed portraits as well as wider group shots.

The phone runs on a 2.2GHz octa- core processor and 4GB RAM. It has 32GB of onboard storage (which can be boosted with a microSD card) and is water- and dust-resistant.

At this price point, Samsung’s handset goes up against two models already on the market, both of which also have some tempting specs. Launched in November 2017, the OnePlus 5T comes loaded with lots of topend technologies, including a six-inch AMOLED edge-to- edge display with an 18: 9 aspect ratio, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and up to 8GB RAM. It also has a fingerprint reader and facial recognition technology for locking/unlocking the phone.

Released in January, the Honor View 10 plays the AI card with its new- generation Kirin 970 processor.

This highly powerful chip can memorise user behaviour to anticipate actions and speed up certain processes, as well as carrying out real-time translations and recognising and analysing various scenes to optimise image quality via the camera. The handset has a sixinch 18: 9 screen and a dual main camera.

It seems that Samsung will face tough competition in this particular market segment, where the South Korean manufacturer usually reigns supreme. Still, even with comparable hardware, Samsung benefits from a considerably more extensive distribution network for its models. — Relaxnews
