‘Provide information on areas yet to receive electricity’

KUCHING: Community leaders are reminded to channel information on areas under them that have yet to receive electricity supply.

According to Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, grassroots leaders, especially those from the rural areas, need to identify areas within their jurisdiction and get the elected representatives to be involved.

“Under the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) of my ministry, lighting up areas without electricity is a continuous process and we need input from the people.”

Dr Abdul Rahman said this after officiating at a banana-planting event hosted by the Batu Lintang and Pantai Damai branches of Sarawak United National Youths Organisation (Saberkas) at Bandar Baru Samariang here yesterday.

“RES aims to achieve 100per cent electricity coverage for Sarawak by 2025, which we are working hard to achieve,” he said.

“Most rural areas are powered by electricity, with certain areas yet to be electrified for various reasons, depending on location. From time to time, we work to solve arising issues and to achieve the 100-per cent mark,” he said.

On another note Dr Abdul Rahman, who is Pantai Damai assemblyman, praised Saberkas for its initiative in beautifying the area through the programme and also strengthening its relations with the locals.

“The involvement of the youths in today’s banana planting event exposes them to programmes beneficial to the community,” he said.
