‘Crucial for firefighters to attend refresher courses’

-

KAPIT: Every firefighter should grab the opportunity to undergo refresher courses, specifically those meant to prepare them for any event of emergency.

According to Kapit Fire and Rescue chief Irwandy Tugor, every new recruit must go through all types of training to enhance their physical and mental fitness but once they are posted, they may not have the chance to undergo refresher courses.

“The purpose of this (refresher) training is to further sharpen their technical skills and readiness in facing emergency situations, such as fire on a high-rise building – this is a situation that requires them to enhance their skills in rapelling (controlled descent off a vertical slope using ropes).

“We want our firemen to be ready in any kind of critical situation; as such, we carry out various types of training from time to time, to ensure that our firemen are always in tip-top condition and ever ready to perform their best in times of emergency,” he told reporters after leading his team of 15 firefighters in a rappelling exercise conducted at the Bletih State Complex here on Friday.

The firefighters were required to go through several ‘obstacles’ during the session such as rappelling off the ninth floor of the complex building, doing the ‘flying fox’ from there and conducting ‘water rescue’.

They also did a fire drill and a re- enactment of a road accident rescue earlier.

Adding on, Irwandy said many of the participants were new recruits.
