Memorial service for former community leader

KUCHING: A memorial service was held for former Chinese community leader Lu Kim Yong at his residence in Three Hills Park, Jalan Foochow yesterday.

In a eulogy to Lu, Pemanca Ko Wai Neng said he lost a best friend, whom he had known since their time as classmates in secondary school.

He said Lu was active and selfless in his service to the community.

Among those present at the service were Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and ECommerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Batu Kitang assemblyma­n Lo Khere Chiang, Dudong assemblyma­n Datuk Tiong Thai King, and Dr Chou Chii Ming – former Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Chinese Associatio­ns president.

Lu’s ashes will be scattered into Sungai Muara Tebas today as well as placed in the columbariu­m at Tong Kak Kuang Temple.

Lu served as Temenggong from 2012 to 2016.

He was Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Chinese Associatio­ns president, Kuching Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry vicepresid­ent, and Chung Hua Middle Schools Nos. 1, 3 & 4 management of committee secretary-general.

Lu was chairman of Ghee Yong Holdings ( LKY) Sdn Bhd, GYH E-Vehicle Sdn Bhd, Ghee Yong Enterprise Sdn Bhd, Ghee Yong Hire Purchase and Mortgage Sdn Bhd, and Homestay Hotel.

He passed away on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur at the age of 71.

Lu is survived by his wife Thok Geok Kee, four daughters, two sons and 13 grandchild­ren.
