Inaugural Borneo Diabetes Conference from July 13 to 15 at Meritz Hotel Miri
MIRI: The inaugural Borneo Diabetes Conference 2018 will be held at Meritz Hotel Miri from July 13 to 15.
Organised by Diabetes Malaysia Miri Branch, and supported by Miri Division Health Office and Miri Hospital as well as endorsed by Ministry of Health Malaysia, the international conference is expecting more than 200 doctors, nurses, and endocrinology specialists to discuss topics like primary care in diabetes, diabetes and complications, selfmonitoring blood glucose, wound care, diabetes and elder, foot care, diabetes in children and adolescents, cardiovascular, diet, diabetes and exercise.
“Thisconferenceisanopportunity to gather all specialists in this field to discuss diabetes and related topics, and with the rising number of patients in Miri, it gives a good platform to achieve understanding in working to promote diabetes awareness to locals here,” said Jong Koi Chong, chairman of the conference’s working committee, during a press conference at a hotel here on Monday evening.
Jong revealed that among the key speakers expected at the conference are president of Diabetes Malaysia, Dato’ Dr Ikram Shah Ismail who is also dean of Faculty of Medicine at University Malaya; Prof Datuk Annuar Zaini, dean of Faculty of Medicine at Sunway University; Dr Janet Hong, paediatric endocrinology specialist at Hospital Putrajaya; and Prof Juliana Chan, an endocrinologist and dean of Faculty of Medicine at University of Hong Kong.
“We are happy these key speakers have confirmed attendance, and we are looking forward to welcoming more, as invitation letters have been sent out.”
Jong said prior to the conference, two committees – a working committee headed by him and 18 other members; and a scientific committee headed by Dato’ Dr Fam Tem Lom and a team of 12 doctors – will be working proactively towards the conference.
“The working committee will be working on tentative programmes and sending invitations while the scientific committee will be working on research,” Jong said, adding that both teams would be advised by state Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim; Miri Divisional medical officer Dr Veronica Lugah; and Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong Siew Yu.
Registration for the conference is now open with early bird price of RM250 per person for doctors, RM200 per person for paramedics, RM220 per person for members of Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and US$150 per person for oversea participants.
After the early bird registration deadline on May 1, 2018; the registration fee is RM300 per person for doctors, RM250 per person for paramedics, RM270 per person for members of Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and US$ 200 per person for oversea participants.
“We are anticipating attendance by participants from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan,” Jong said.
