BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Royal Malaysia Police ( PDRM) will be receiving 871 high-powered Kawasaki motorcycles this year for its motorcycle patrol units ( URB) throughout the country.

Inspector- General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said of these, 200 will be Kawasaki KLX250 scrambler motorcycles which will be used by policemen in the states bordering Thailand.

“With this increase in the number of motorcycles, I am confident we can tackle crime more effectively, especially in crime-prone areas.

“We are confident that with the scramblers (trail bikes) , the security of the border areas will be more assured because these motorcycles can traverse hilly areas and narrow paths,” he told reporters after officiating the handing- over ceremony of Kawasaki Model Z250 and KLX250 motorcycles at the General Operations Force Tactical Base here yesterday.

Also present was Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Tajudin Md Isa, Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff and executive chairman of Kawasaki Motors ( Malaysia) Ahmad Faez Tan Sri Yahaya.

At the ceremony, Kedah police received 67 motorcycles, 20 of which were handed to the GOF which patrol the state’s border with Thailand.

“Four of the motorcycles are scramblers and all the states will get them in stages,” Mohamad Fuzi said, adding that the 871 motorcycles were worth about RM28 million.

At present, Mohamad Fuzi said, PDRM owned 4,189 patrol motorcycles.

“We received very good feedback about the unit as the motorcycles are able to go to the locations faster, in less than 10 minutes.

“I want to thank the government for its concern for the needs of security forces, especially PDRM, in providing assets which are for the wellbeing of the people,” he said. — Bernama
