‘Keep abreast with advanced technologies’

With the Big Data, it can be matched and stimulated through the hydro carbon profile. Only two persons are needed to get the job done, which would normally be an arduous task without technology as it involves planting pipes deep into the field.

KUCHING: Sarawakians must adopt and keep abreast with new and advanced technologies to boost their capabilities in the oil and gas ( O& G) sector, including expanding the state’s participation in both onshore and offshore exploration.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who stated this, pointed out that the state must be brave enough in exploring advanced technologies especially those that involve Big Data and new techniques in the O& G industry.

“There, we observed how drilling is done electronically in the desert of Oman in which the data retrieved will ref lect how much hydrocarbon reserve is available down there ( beneath the Earth’s surface),” he said in sharing what he and his delegation learned during their visit to Oman recently.

“With the Big Data, it can be matched and stimulated through the hydro carbon profile. Only two persons are needed to get the job done, which would normally be an arduous task without technology as it involves planting pipes deep into the field,” he added.

Abang Johari said this when officiating at the Loadout Ceremony of E6 DP-A Topside and Substructure operated by Sarawak Shell Berhad at the Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation ( BDEWC) Sejingkat fabrication yard, Jalan Bako yesterday.

The auspicious occasion was witnessed by State Secretary Tan

Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Chief Minister

Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing who is also the Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation, Shell Companies in Malaysia chairman Datuk Iain Lo and BDEWC chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Abang Openg.

“This is the way Sarawak will adopt because ( otherwise) Sarawak will lose its abilities to explore O& G both onshore and offshore,” he said, stressing on the crucial need for Sarawakians to enhance their capabilities through new technology.

As such, he urged Sarawak to embrace and adopt new technology so as to expand participation in O& G exploration on its own.

“Equipping ourselves also enables us to sit down and talk with industry players on the same page.

“Sarawak must have the capabilities because oil and gas have been in the state since 1910. That’s why Petros is being set up. We will explore the possibilities and find our own reserve ourselves based on the best technology and Big Data information,” he added.

Emphasising government’s commitment to look into all aspects necessary to make O& G a prominent sector in Sarawak, Abang Johari reassured that Petros will become an active player in the O& G industry within two years.

“Petros will be assisted by the vendors and contractors to explore and find out about our reserve including the availability of hydrocarbon reserve,” he added.

Earlier on, he said that engineering capabilities, safety and project management were three important components to ensure the success of all projects, particularly technical and engineering-based.

“I am proud to say that Sarawakians are a capable lot but we must not take safety aspect lightly. Safety cannot be ignored and must be given greater emphasis even in small jobs so as to avoid any mishaps that could cause the loss of life,” he said, pointing to an accident near a road construction site in the city which claimed the life of a motorist.

He thus congratulated BDEWC for the successful and timely completion and delivery of the project without injury and within budget.

The E6 field development is a part of the SK308 production sharing contract awarded by Petronas to Sarawak Shell Berhad (50 per cent operator) and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd ( 50 per cent).

E6 is an oil and gas field located 180km west of Miri in water depth of 70m or 228ft.

The contract for the fabrication of 1,450-tonne topside and 1,500tonne jacket for the E6 Field Development Project was awarded to Brooke Dockyard on Sept 5, 2016.

The contract involved the provision of project management, fabrication, engineering, procurement, manpower, materials, consumables, equipment and facilities necessary for the onshore fabrication of the E6 platforms.

The event yesterday marked two major milestone achievements for the E6 Field Development Project - the successful onshore completion of the above tasks in 12 months and 10 months respectively, and recognition for having the technical capabilities and strong labour force who worked over 13 months, clocking 1.2 million injury-free work hours.

Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala, Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Hipni as well as officials and personnel from Petronas and Shell were among those present.
