M’sia makes history with World Urban Forum today
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will create history with the hosting of the Ninth World Urban Forum ( WUF9) in Kuala Lumpur, beginning today until Feb 13.
The event is expected to attract over 30,000 participants from 192 countries.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said the ministry aimed to attract about 25,000 participants, with 50 per cent from aboard.
“Over 70 ministers and mayors worldwide have registered for WUF9,” he said in his speech when launching ‘ Setemku’, a special series of stamps issued by Pos Malaysia in conjunction with WUF9 at the ministry here yesterday.
The limited edition stamps priced at 60 sen each involves a production of 5,000 stamps featuring the WUF9 logo.
The stamps are available at the WUF9 merchandise counter in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Counter, beginning yesterday.
The seven- day forum, held for the second time in Asia will hold over 500 events, including assemblies, high-level roundtable talks, dialogues and special sessions.
Themed ‘Cities 2030, Cities for All: Implementing the New Urban Agenda’, the forum hosted by Kuala Lumpur will focus on implementing the new urban agenda.
WUF is a non-legislative forum convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme ( UN- Habitat) since 2002 and is hosted bi-annually to study most pressing issues faced by the world today.
Prior to Kuala Lumpur, other cities which hosted the forum include Naples, Rio de Janeiro, Nanjing, Vancouver, Barcelona and Nairobi. — Bernama
