Motorists told to exercise caution on damaged roads in Selangau

-

SIBU: Those travelling between Bintulu and Sibu are advised to be extra careful when driving along damaged road stretches, especially in Selangau.

Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira said certain stretches between Selangau and Sungai Arip have been damaged because of soil erosion caused by bad weather.

“Due to non- stop rain which is expected to continue in the next few days in all divisions in Sarawak, schools and longhouses have been flooded.

“These include areas in Selangau and Sungai Arip. Additionally, a stretch of Sibu-Bintulu Road is flooded and damaged, presenting a safety hazard,” he said in a Facebook post.

Gira said he has already notified the Public Works Department (JKR) to carry out repair works at the damaged stretches.

He also advised longhouse residents in flood- affected areas to follow the instructions of the authorities and move to safer ground if told to do so.

“The Disaster Operations Room at Selangau District Office was activated on Tuesday, giving round-the- close assistance.

“Those who need help may call the District Office or Sibu Resident Office, or the State Disaster Management Committee,” he added.

It is learnt that two evacuation centres were opened at SK Bukit Arip and SJK Tong Ah, Selangau at 2.30pm yesterday.

In Kanowit, the Majau/Poi Road was impassable to smaller vehicles as of 10am yesterday.

A van driver, Frankie Ayong, said he had to leave his vehicle and use a longboat to get across the flooded road stretch some 10km from Kanowit town.
