MQA wants tertiary institutions to seek its approval to implement APEL (C)

-

KUALA LUMP UR: The Malaysian Qualifications Agency( MQA) has called on all public and private higher education institutions to seek its approval before implementing the Accreditation of Prior Experimental Learning [APEL (C)] for credit transfer at their respective institutions.

AP EL( C) is a learning evaluation process ( informal and non-formal) of an individual based on cumulative experiences ( knowledge and skills) to obtain credit transfer for the courses(s) in the programme enrolled.

MQA, in a statement, said only tertiary institutions which had obtained the agency’s approval to implement APEL(C) could allow the transfer of credits for their students.

“At the moment, only five tertiary institutions have obtained the approval, namely Universiti Teknologi MARA ( UiTM), Open University Malaysia (OUM), Wawasan Open University (WOU), INTI International University and Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL),” it said.

APEL, an alternative route to higher education was first launched as APEL (A)(Access) for admission to a bachelor’s degree study programme for those with work experience but lacked the academic qualifications. APEL(C) (Credit) provides an opportunity for those with work experience or have attended short courses, to obtain exemption from taking up subjects related to their work experience, thus reducing the credits they need to take. — Bernama
